Default 2011 Outlander transmission issue...

I have a 2011 4WD outlander with 145k miles. I’ve never been a fan of the CVT transmission it hs but I love everything else about the vehicle! I’ve owned it for 2 years now and today while starting a road trip the transmission died ( for lack of better word) I know there’s lots online about multiple years having issues as big as needing it to be completely replaced so just wanted to see if anyone could maybe help me narrow down what actually might be wrong.

The engine started to have a pretty out of the ordinary whine then while going 65 in cruise control the RPM went from 2500 ish to 6000 with no increase in speed, it did this a few times while still in cruise control, when I took it out and was driving normally it still was sparatically going from 2000 to 6000 still with no increase in speed ... when I got off the freeway there was a slight smoke and burning smell comming from the very start of the exhaust manifold but no visible leaks. When I tried to get back on the freeway to get it home I couldn’t go faster the 15 MPH and after It got towed home It had no power to even move.

Any help is appreciated!!

On January 22, 2020, I took my car to your service department for servicing (oil change). During my
visit, your service tech approach me and stated that I needed some other services, transmission fluid
exchange, replace oil pan gasket, and a set of tires to keep their vehicle in proper working condition. I
trusted his recommendation and allow services to be completed. My car had to stay overnight. Shortly
after picking it up the next day, everything appeared ok, but less than 24 hour later, my transmission
started slipping badly. I immediately contact the service department and was asked to bring for a
diagnosis. I was told that I need a new transmission.
