Default 2012 Outlander Rear view camera issues

I have a 2012 Outlander. It has the back up camera which displays in the rear view mirror. I've been having issues with the back up camera. What happens is when I put it in reverse, first will display a blue screen that has the "check your surroundings " warning. The blue screen will show for 5 seconds or so. Then it will do one of two things. It will either display the camera as per usual or the display will shut off completely. Lately it's been more the latter. I've visually inspected the camera itself and the connections in the tailgate. Everything seems good. Presumably the display screen itself is okay as it seems to work well when it does. No idea where to go from there. Any help would be appreciated.

Okay. Clearly I'm not getting anywhere with my question. Well, to get the ball rolling, I will share my thoughts in an effort to maybe initiate a brainstorm session.

Based on the info I have and the diagrams in the repair manual, here's what I can figure out.

For the camera not to be displaying, there could be one of the following things:
1. Camera is not working
2. ECU is not working
3. Display screen is not working.

Okay, to start, let's eliminate #3. The display is working, but not displaying from the camera (though the display does shut off after 5 seconds or so). So, that tells me that it's likely not that the display doesn't work so much as the display is not receiving the appropriate information.

That leaves 1 and 2. From what I understand, the back-up distance markers are generated by the ECU. IE: If there was an issue with the camera in and of itself, the markers would still display over top a blue screen. That leads me to think the ECU may be the culprit. But, this info is based on a YouTube video from a different make/model. So, this may not be accurate.

If it is the ECU, from what I understand, the ECU is integral to the head unit (at least in the case of an infotainment system). However, mine doesn't have infotainment. The display is in the rear view. Is the ECU still in the head unit? Is it in the rear view mirror? Is it independent of either? I tried piecing it together from the wiring diagrams but I just gave myself a headache.

Anyway, that's what I've figured out, thus far, based on my internet research and DIY knowledgability. If anybody would like to either confirm/deny my suspicions and/or offer any suggestions as to how I might be able to narrow down the issue further, please do. Any help/thoughts on the subject are appreciated.

Default 2012 Outlander Rear view camera issues

Hi Michael, I have the same problem. Just bought my 2012 outlander about one month ago. I haven't taken the time to trace the wiring yet to make sure everything is connected yet

Ddi you guys ever figure this out? I'm now experiencing the exact same thing as Mudary.. goes blue, then sometimes work, sometimes not but mainly not now.

Any luck troubleshooting anything yet?
