Default 2014 Outlander Hatch Failure

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. I tried to operate my hatch from the button on the back of the hatch. The hatch opened normally and fully and immediately closed, all at normal speed. Tried again with the same result. Put the hatch in manual mode and I could hardly lift it. In this mode, I can at least prop it up with a 2X4. I am assuming that I have had catastrophic failure of the gas charged prop rods, but both of them to go at once? I will bring it in to the nearest dealer but it's about an hour away and is not convenient at this time. Ideas?

Follow up. The problem was one of the prop rods (there's 2) had failed. Cost of the rod was C$250 +$50 installation. Kinda ridiculous but I realize now, I am paying for the 100K/160K km warranty.
