Timing chain, and do use the 0W-20 Synthetic oil Mitsu. sells. From what I've found, it is actually less expensive to buy it from the dealer than any parts store. $5-7 per quart. Tighten the drain plug to 29 plus or minus 3 ft/lbs. Turn the oil filter one complete turn after the seal becomes in contact with engine.

5qt jug is all you need. WalMart sells Mobile1/Penzoil Plat for $25. Doesn't get cheaper than that unless you find special deals/rebates. As long as you use the correct weight of oil, you can use conventional. Downside to conventional is a shorter oil change interval. That interval depends on your driving habits/style.

You sure it's a chain drive and not a belt? I could swear that there is a belt, and the owners manual gives change-out mileage.

Dealer told me timing chain..I asked specifically so I wouldn't have any surprises at 60-90000 miles...the 2.4 4 cylinder has a timing chain, the 3.0 V6 has a timing belt..

Just to confirm; does the timing chain ever need replacing or adjusting? My last two Mits were V6 with belts, so I'm unfamiliar with the whole chain thing.

Chains are good for a much longer time. My '98 Ranger is still running on the original timing chain and I'm close to hitting 200k miles on it. Though I'm sure it is probably about done.
