Default 4WD

New member here. I have been looking to buy a new SUV/CUV and have been reading up a lot on the'08 Outlander. I really like the design of the vehicle and the interior is nice. I haven't test driven one yet but I did sit in oneand I like it. I currently have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4wd and I love it. It's going on 125,000 miles and still running strong....but I'm looking for a new ride. If you'veowned a Jeep GC, you know how amazing the 4WD system is in snow and ice and all kinds of bad weather. It will go through anything fast....just grips to the road.Of course, a good set oftires helps as well. For you '07 and '08 Outlander owners, how is this vehicle in the snow and ice? I noticed that these vehicles come with the Goodyear LS tires which have terrible reviews on the tirerack. Now, I don't know if this tires is standard equipmentthroughout the U.S., but here in the Northeast (NJ), this seems to be the standard. What are your opinions/experiences with the Outlander in winter conditions and with this tire? Thanks!

Is a great vehicle to own! I have the 07' XLS Model. Only own it for about 2 months. I saw you post, and you are really looking forward to the 4wd. Well, my story is that last weekend, here at Toronto, we got a good 30 cm of snow. I took my outie for a 3hr drive on the highway. I see cars sliping and sliding everywhere. Every 10 sec, there was cars on the shoulder of the highway. CRAZY

I was doing 80km/h on snow that is 20cm thick. I never slip or slide for the whole time. (I ahve the 4wd LOCK at that time of course)
I see cars thats 2wd and they are sliping and sliding with 40-60 km/h. So you can really trust on those 4WD LOCK system. (Did I tell you, at that time, I still have my stock Good Yr tires on) NO WINTER TIRES

One thing I dont like is the sound proving.I can hear snow, water, ice hitting the car. I hurts my heart when I hear that =(

Overall, great SUV, good looking too =D

Had my outtie for 6 mo now here in Colorado. Have used the 4WD system from rain, ice, and snow up to 14 inches so far. I know that Jeep owners usually love their 4WD systems, but this new Outlander has a pretty cool system as well. You should go to this link to find out the good stuff: http://media.mitsubishicars.com/deta...0&mime=ASC

Other than that if your looking to replace your Jeep GC this is a pretty good swap. Its going to be hard tofind the amount of options for any cheaper. The XLS is loaded with gadgets. Vehicles that come with some of the same are usually going to run about 5 to 15k more than a loaded Outtie.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the tire's winter capability thus far. We have had several pretty bad days days here in NE Ohio already. Once you put it in 4wd lock mode, the Outlander is more than capable. At the rate that the tires are wearing, however, I doubt if I will be able to run them next winter due to lack of tread depth. I may look for a set of stock 16s that someone here is looking to unload when they upgade to fancy new wheels and buy a good set of all season tires.

Thanks for the replies. I was mainly just curious as to the capabilities of the 4WD on the Outlander. I asked because I came across this video on youtube and at the :52 second mark, the Outlander seems to be stuck in light snow/ice. Is this the case of bad tires or was the driver perhaps not in Lock mode. Also, can the Outlander be driven at highway speeds when inLock mode?

Here's the video:

You can change from 2WD, to 4WD Auto, to 4WD Lock, at any speed, in any condition. We just got 8 inches of fresh stuff here in CO. Im loving the outtie.

Just to note about that youtube video. That is a non-US version. So it has a different motor for one. Two, it probably doesnt have snow tires, and the road looks pretty slick.

Yeah, I basically saw all the Outlander videos on you tube. I actually like the non-US version of the grill over the US version. I'm sure the Outlander is capable in the snow, could be just bad tires in that video I posted. Seriously thinking about leasing an Outlander XLS. Probably wait until 2009and wondering what changes, if any, Mitsubishi will make to the Outlander in the next couple of years. Very nice vehicle at a great price.

the only thing about the outlander, ( i have a crv before do the same thing), when you are stock in the snow, ( like jack ), only my front left weel, and my back right weel spin.
BUT, i try on nice Ice, and 4 Weel spin, and you still have control of the car, that a rely good thing.
But for the snow, i juste still not understand.
