The octane rating basically tells you the fuel requires a higher temperature for optimal combustion, or in other words thefuel's ability to resist ignition/detonation.
This doesn't have anything to do with fuel economy or performance since you're engine is already designed to function optimally at a certain level of combustion. So in my opinion you're only wasting your money on higher octane fuel. It may not knock as much since there's less combustion, but you won't see any better performance.

also, using higher octane fuel when not recommended means there will be excess fuel after detonation, leaving traces of unused fuel, that over time builds up. Just use whats recommended...
