Believe it or not, I just replaced my tires and the steering float decreased dramatically. I guess it appeared slowly over time as the tires wore. I still have a little pull to the left, and that's probably an alignment issue. I was told less than a year ago that all my front suspension parts looked good and tight, so I was frustrated at the steering float and the lack of an explanation. The old tires were General Altimax at almost 50k miles. I'd say the steering float appeared well before now, but new tires have made a big improvement. New tie rod ends might help even more.
