Default High-Pitch Engine Bay Noise

I have owned a Mk2 Outlander Diamond 2.2 (08 Plate) for the last two years. Every time I switch the engine off there is a high pitched whine from the engine bay followed by some mechanical clicks and this repeats about three times over about 30-40 seconds. The car is then silent. I have presumed that this is normal because the car has been in Mitsubishi dealerships for service and other work with no-one making a comment.

This morning, the car is making the high pitch whining noise from the engine bay (no clicks) but it is sitting turned off on the drive way. I started it, moved it 50 yards and turned it off and it went through the cycle described in the first paragraph but the high pitched whining noise continues.

Help! What on earth is this as the car is turned off!

Grateful if anyone else can speculate what this might be - it is not the fans though as they are not running,

Thanks,

GT
