Default High-speed shakes

I noticed recently that my 2011 Outlander V6 AWD shakes rather fiercely above 70 MPH (120km/h) (I don’t get that fast often). I had just installed the winter tires/rims so I assumed I needed them balanced. That seemed to help but it still shakes quite a bit. I notice nothing at all until I hit 70. If I’m accelerating or going up hill it doesn’t shake at all. If I let off the gas, go faster, go downhill, or turn either direction it gets worse. The steering wheel is moving rapidly side to side about 1/4 inch. Brakes are new and smooth. I’m going to check what happens if I shift to Neutral, any other ideas?

Update: shifting to N has no effect so I’m thinking wheel or suspension.
It actually starts shaking a bit lower than I thought, about 60 mph but almost imperceptible.

Was it shaking before you put winter tires? If no, then your problem is in your new tires.

I didn’t notice shaking before, but I never went fast enough. The first step is obviously to swap the tires, but it’s about to snow. I’ve been hearing rattling in the front end when it’s cold but it dissipates after a couple miles of driving so I’m going to check for play while I have it jacked up. Thanks for the ideas.
