I have a little over 30k miles on my 06 SE. I just adjusted the valves, or at least tried too. All of them where were in spec. when I measured them with the filler gauge. My question is when does this need to be done? I have had the car for almost 2 years now, my wife drives it mainly and she dosnt drive it hard. It does have a lot of highway miles, and we change the oil on a regular basis, every 6k with Mobil 1 full syn 5w30. I was just wondering how often others adjust the valves (that do it themselves). If I took it to the dealer of course I would never have known that they really didnt need it. It would have been 120 bucks out of my pocket for something that didnt need to be done.

Don't most vehicles these days have hydraulic lifters that self-adjust. I thought valve adjustments were just for motorcycles these days. That being said, once valves and cams have gone through their initial wear-in, they probably don't need adjusting very often.

 

Not using a mitsubishi oil filter will make the cams tick but they should not need adjusting on this engine.

What make of oil filter are you using?

I use the OEM oil filter. The MIVEC engine needs valve adjustment. IT is called for in the service guidlines. The valves on the MIVEC 4G69 dont self adjust. I understand that most engines these days (MITSU is the only one, other than motos, I know know that dosnt) self adjust. MY question was how often do they really need to be done. The dealer recomends 30k or every 2 years, OR whenever it is necessary. I have not owned an engine that needed this in about 10 years. Again when I got the valve cover off and tested the clearance, none of the intake or exhaust valves needed an adjustment. I was just wondering how other 4G69 owners have been dealing with this and what their expierances have been.

 

Dont bother with a valve adjust. Even though they are mechanically adjustable, they will NEVER need to be adjusted.
