cheech, depending on your driving habits and oil you use, you can extend it. I've got a thread, several months back, where I posted some Used Oil Analysis results. I can use Penzoil Platinum and Mobile1 on a 7500 mile oil change interval without any worry I'm damaging the engine.

My ranger on the the other hand is only good for 5k miles as my engine is barely up to temperature by the time I get to work. My wife is really on the highway a lot, so those are nice easy miles. I'm doing short city trips which is very hard on the oil.

Edit: Advance Auto has an insane deal this month on Penzoil Platinum @ Purolator PureOne oil filter all for $21 after rebates. When buying as a set, you are allowed two sets...if you bend the oil rebate rules a bit, you can get four sets. I'm stocking up this month!

ALSO mentioned the type of oil Viscosity and certain climate changes, Im from NYC, i use 5w20, will using 5w30 be better off? where would viscosity be a factor on where you live. lastly i will say sorry if i jumped to a different subject. last time I asked a question with in a post that was slightly off topic someone had a hard on for me.
3k oil changes are complete waste of time and money unless using old mineral oils. Fully synthetic every 6k is probably still overkill. I agree with ccernst that 7.5k fully synthetic is completely safe. I am from the UK (although live in USA), and in Europe, we tend to change oil no less than every 10k. In summer months, 5w30 will be fine.
