Default Outlander Not Reaching Optimal Gas Mileage

I have a 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS V6 Automatic 6 Speed 4WD, I used to be able to reach 22-28 miles per gallon(In 2WD Mode) fairly easily. Now I am lucky if I reach 20 MPGs. Has anyone experienced this issue? What can I do to fix it?

Same vehicle here and I have always gotten 20-23 mpg in 'mixed' driving - not pure city, not pure highway, mostly rural back roads but speed limit 40 mph for the most part. 20 mpg is pretty normal for this time of year where I live (CT). I believe the best I have ever done for pure highway is 26 mpg - no way I've ever seen 28 mpg.

Not sure what the issue might be for you, but here are some ideas:
- Is it running the same as it was before? Down on power, or everything just the same?
- Is the tire pressure good all around?
- Any recent work done that might have caused a problem?
- Different tires? (I think I remember you posting about replacing tires)

I'm sure you've already thought of all that, but hey - you asked.

Good luck.

I feel that it is running great in terms of power, just recently I replaced all the shocks, Struts, inner and outter tie rods. I did get new tires and they are very grippy, what tire pressure do you set your tires to? I am in New Jersey. I was wondering if getting a scan tool could help but there are zero warning lights on not sure if the code reader would help.

I just run what the plate says - 32 psi all around.

I'm not sure what could cause such a drop for you. In my experience certain tires can cost you 2 mpg or so, but that's about it.

I wouldn't bother with a code reader either as it seems there aren't any codes. How about air filter - changed lately?

I’m the winter around here, (North East US) they refineries use a winter blend fuel to prevent gas line freezing and such and it affects fuel mileage a little. Also, running your windshield defroster also runs your a/c compressor to help clear the windshield and that drag in the motor will also cause a drop in mileage.
