This is all insane. This iswhy you buy a 2000$ lifted jeep and go swamp it. My car sees 1 dirt road and thats to go take care of the girl friends horse. I do 5 mph over the 1/8 mile road.

You inspired me to try a little more bushwacking yesterday. I live in VT, where every 1 in 5 cars is a Subaru, and every 1 in 5 roads is dirt. (I've only seen 1 other Outie, BTW).
I was really pleased with it overall. I like it better with ASC off and in manual shift mode It has plenty of torque and is smooth going up tight steep switchbacks, etc. Stable at speed over fairly bumpy terrain.
The only complaint I have is that it (maybe just the XLS with 18" wheels) doesn't deal well with real heavy washboard. On the worst of it, if I didn't slow to a crawl, it sounded like the car was going to shake to peices. I think this is the tradeoff with the excellent on-road performance, and again - maybe the 18" wheels.
My mudflaps should be here early next week too!

Must be the tires, I was impressed with the washborad ride on the LS.
