Default Tailgate sensor problem...maybe???

I have a 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander with the keyless entry system. I have been having issues when using the keyless entry on the tailgate (when locking/unlocking using the buttons on the tailgate itself).

Drivers and passenger side operation does not seem to be affected. In fact, when I have issues while standing centered with the tailgate, if I stand to the side it will work.

Also, it seems to be intermittent. I brought it to the dealer this morning for a recall and mentioned it. When they tried it it worked fine.

The fob has a new battery and otherwise works fine. I did have some body work done to the tailgate area a couple months back. But it worked fine when I picked it up. The issue is fairly recent. Also, my B to B warranty has expired.

Is it possible that there is a loose connection to the sensor? Where is it located? Is there a way of testing it?
