I've a new, 2011 Outlander with the 2.4L CVT trans. It is rated for 1500 lb towing capacity. (don't know how much that is in metric stuff). Pulls my 16 ft alum fishing boat with no problem.

I was looking at the Outlander Sport, smaller version of the Outlander, and it is not recommended to tow anything.

Our Oulanders 3.0 AT (6 speed automatic, not TC-SST) are rated at 3500 lbs towing (roughly 1500 kg) only.

Your car is diesel and with TC-SST, it is rated for 2000 kg (due to considerably higher torque I guess, 380N*m vs 290 N*m for our 3 liter).

Max släpvagnsvikt (bromsad) kg 2000
So you were told right, towing 2000 kg load should not hurt your transmission. Go to dealer, it must be covered under the warranty.
