I have seen someone towing a boat behind their Outlander. It looked a bit awkward.

But not as awkward as someone towing a boat behind their Cadillac CTS.

I have 2.0d-id, think it would struggle with that caravan, but I have never towed with it, is it the 2.2 u would be buying.

I would stick with the RR stable

2000kg=4400lbs is above the rated tow capacity of the Outlander even with trailer brakes. I wouldnt attempt that much.

I do however tow almost weekly with my Outlander up to about 1000lbs. I dont see a noticeable dip in my mpg as mostly im towing on surface streets.

And when I tow my sailboats behind my Outlander it looks right at home. Suppose I should take pictures.

Honestly, I wouldn't trust the OEM brake setup with the Outlander. It would need to be beefed up for *me* to tow something that heavy. Then again, the highway out of where I live has a long 8.5% grade section. Flatter terrain should be fine. I don't believe you'll have issues moving with the 3.0L V6 or the diesel versions. I would recommending not even looking at the one with the 2L VW TDi, as it has a known design fault (self destructing turbo).

Then you will have to look into suspension issues depending on the tongue weight of the trailer. You will need to beef up the rear suspension with an airbag or something to prevent it from bottoming out if it is too heavy.
As for off roading, Outlander has firmer suspension than most cars I have driven. It will be a bumpy ride to say the least...

So its do-able, but you need to figure out what you are towing and what you mean by off-road. Then look at the terrain you travel for the brakes.
