It has to do with final drive gering, cooling system capacity and transmission oil cooling.

If the manual says 2000 lb, I'd beleive it.

My 2012 GT (swac,6 spd auto, 3.0 V6) is rated for 3500.

You're welcome.

Also don't forget brakes. Downhill + towing a 2000lb load, you'll struggle to stop the thing.

I would have thought traction would be more the problem. A wet boat ramp, front wheel drive and trailer weight could not be a good combination.

These days with the mandatory traction control systems, slipping wheels aren't too much of a problem for your average idiot driver.

However, your point stands true... that'd sure make for a tricky exit.

There are certainly things you can do. Weigh the tongue of the trailer and see how that correlates to the load rating. If the trailer is well balanced leading to a low tongue weight, adding trailer brakes to the trailer is going to allow you to tow significantly more. You will be amazed at how much better a balanced load is to haul.

Ive towed much more with much less as well. I recently helped my brother tow a 3600lb car with a Jeep Liberty over 200 miles. The only issue we had the whole way was a trailer tire that had a slow leak.

Back when I was young and dumb i towed a 20' cabin cruiser from DC to Atlanta with a 4cyl two wheel drive Ranger. Not a single issue.

Keep it below 60 and be cautious and youll be fine.
