Towing 3,500 lb Trailer, my experiance.
I know this is a bit old, but it seemed relevant given the issues I've encountered the last year or so on my 2007 Outlander LS towing my 2000 Coleman Niagara popup, which is rated with GVWR of 3250.
Last spring I had the air bag kit from Firestone installed. Though it always had a slow leak, I put up with it. But now the right air spring has failed, it leaks from around the fitting. I've looked around and seen a few different forum posts elsewhere of this happening to others with the Firestone Ride-Rites. They'll replace the bag for free, but that doesn't help pay for the costs for my mechanic to replace the bad bag.
I've decided that rather than do that, I'm having the receiver that was installed by the dealer when I bought the Outlander new - which is marked as being unable to handle a WDH, though it in fact has five bolts attaching it on each side (three vertically into the frame rail and two horizontally into the outside of the frame) - replaced with a HiddenHitch 87444 which specifically says it can handle a WDH, though it only has the three bolts on each side plus the attachment for the tow hook. I looked at the Curt mentioned earlier, but it says it's not rated for a WDH! See the etrailer.com site for details. I'm not sure why the HH can handle WDH and the Curt can't though they attach the same. Or why the OEM can't with all those bolts holding it onto the car.
I will be installing a Eaz Lift WDH kit like the one pictured above. I already have a friction sway bar for the setup that I've used up to now.
I'll let you know how it goes after our trip next week.
