Default Towing in 4WD

Hi there, so I have a 2008 Outlander XLS 3L 4WD. My concern is the towing capacity. The manual I have for it is in french, the vehicle is from Quebec Canada. So in trying to interpret to English it says the max tow weight is 2000lbs in front wheel drive and 3500lbs in 4WD. Is this correct, and in which setting do i use, 4WD or LOCK? That being said my next concern, is it ok to tow in 4WD on dry pavement for a long period of time?

understand "4WD" is not 4x4, it is more like AWD. I would tow in auto mode.

you can also get user manuals electronically from mitsubishi's site.

Also, I recall that the 3500# rating is noted that trailer brakes are required. And of course with those ratings there is a maximum tongue rating as well.

As well do not use LOCK when towing.

I towed for 3600 KM (2200 miles) and I used both 2WD, 4WD Auto and 4WD Lock and it didn't make a difference. For starts I would use 4WD to avoid wheel spin, but on flat highways I would put it in 2WD for better fuel economy (don't think it really mattered).
@firebuck > why not use 4WD Lock when towing? I don't recall anything in the manual warning against it. The 4WD Lock on the Outlander doesn't really lock the rear, it only provides power to the back between 30%-50% depending on the speed and grip. The 4WD Auto sends only 10-30% of power to the back.

Sorry it wasn't meant as a total restriction.Basically for the reasons you listed there is really no point unless offroad/stuck and I thought the mileage would be worse in lock. Maybe not, I am getting old and my mind is a little fuzzy sometimes.
