I have a 2016 Outlander Sport and have rented U-Haul trailers that were about 850# and 900# and had no issues with them. U-Haul said I could tow up to 1,500#. I do not know why the car's manual said not to tow anything becuase I had no issues with renting the U-Haul trailers several times while I moved. I feel comfortable going up to 1,500 # and will not go over that.
