Red face Towing with Outlander - 2WD, 4WD or LOCK ?

Hi Folks,

I'm picking up my trailer next tuesday and was woundering if anybody has expereince towing with the 4WD models, the manual stats that the 4WD models have a high towing capacity, does that mean I HAVE to tow in 4WD and if so, which setting 4WD or LOCK?

What are your opinions?

I have a 2008 XLS that was not marketed with the S-AWC, although it maybe the same system, I don't know.

Any help is appreciated, thanks !

Mike

I tow my fishing boat in 4wd-not locked.

Pulling the boat is hell on mileage. Drops to 18 mpg, but still better than the Dakota it replaced.

Remenber the 4 cyl is rated at 1500 lb capacity, the V6 is higher, but I don't remember off hand what it is.

Mine is a 2011 Outlander CVT 2.4L 4 cyl

Smile towing

I pull a 1500kg gross weight caravan, always in 2 wheel drive.The only time I use 4wd is on wet fields and then only if the wheels start slipping.
Mine has the 2 litre diesel engine;
permitted towing weight is 2 tons for euro spec cars.

I have a '09 XLS and I tow a 3,500 pound trailer. I always use 2WD except for on grass or dirt. FYI S-AWC only came out in 2010. It is a full time 4WD where you have AWC like I do.

What are you towing?

I have the 2009 ls 2.4 CVT 4wd and the towing caoacity withe genuine hitch is 1500kg or 3300 lbs. I tow a caravan all over the place and leave it in 2wd unless it is slippery. Great tow vehicle. Airbags in the rear help.

The 2.4L Outlander is actually rated for 1,500 pounds. It won't pose a safety problem for you towing more because the 3.0L is rated for 3,500 pounds with trailer brakes (2,000 pounds with no trailer brakes) but you want to make sure you change your transmission fluid often. You may look into an auxiliary transmission cooler.

Do you have the air bags? If you do what brand and how much did they cost?

There is a transmission oil cooler at least on the V6 models since the beginning of the second generation Outlander.

See this thread --> https://mitsubishiforum.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=39920

It's behind the slots on the left side under the "fog" light.

Also, US litigation habit force lower towing limits than place like UK, Europe or Australia for example.

My 2.4lt outie has the transmission cooler as standard. The towbar is an 8 bolt type with a 50mm box hitch. The airbags are Firestone and were fairly easy for me to install. It handles a lot better with them in. I had the tranny oil changed at the recommended 45000k and it was still clean after towing just over 10,000 k with lots of hills. The van weighs 1400kg (3000lbs).

They are less than $100 and apparently easy to install.
