Default Transmission gone or something else?

Hi,
I have Outlander 2010 2.4L I am considering to purchase it for friend in Poland who is a mechanic but with no auto transmission experience.
We also cannot examine car at this point, just considering it from the paper add.

Car is not in working condition but description of the problem is.

Car starts , but when you shift gear , transmission does not engage and there is no gear available. Engine revs but no drive. We do not know if reverse works. I know lots of guessing but maybe someone on the forum seen this in the past.

I wonder what it could be?

Is it transmission shut?
or
Something wrong with some initial engagement process. Latch, small gear etc?

Thanks for guessing

Lysy

I don't know the answer to your question - but to be honest - why not just buy one that actually works?

2.4L has a CVT transmission, so there are no gears. Possibly the belt in the CVT needs to be replaced.
