I heard of it before. But the guy I know it happened to had it happen in a Bronco that the rear windshield defroster malfunctioned. He was sitting in the truck with the AC on waiting for someone and he said he heard something sounded like a shotgun going off and the rear windshield shattered. Said he thought he'd been shot when he noticed the defroster switch was on.
