Default Used Montero Sport Computer Module

my montero sport won't get ignition. just had the timing belt replace and a few other electrical modules. it ran for about two weeks an then suddenly won't get ignition. the mechanic that replaced the timing told me that it's most likely the computer. trying to save money, I bought a used computer from the pick a parts… I made sure the serial numbers were the same. Do i need to take the vehicle to the dealership to have the computer reprogrammed before the vehicle will run? also, i installed the unit without disconnecting the battery… is that bad?

"most likely the computer" Thats a fairly in general statement!

Some simple things you can do yourself to test it

Just turn the key on! Does's check engine light come on (if not check fuse)

Remove ele connector from TPS sensor check for voltage with a volt meter, you should see around 5 volts DC

There is a number of things that will cause no spark! You need to do more homework!

Thanks... i had a mechanic friend do all the tests but, his diagnostic equipment wasn't able to communicate with the Montero computer. He tested, fuses, modules and engine compression, and pretty much eliminated all but the crank sensor and the computer. i went to buy a used computer, hoping that would be the problem. It seemed a lot easier than replacing the crank sensor. The question is... if it is the computer that is the problem and i replace it, does the new (or new/used) computer need to be reprogrammed before the car will start? I really appreciate your advice.

Can't really say! If all the numbers match, plug it in and try it! I have done ecm swap with a 95 olds and it worked. But it was not what was wrong to begin with, Oh well I have a known good spare!
