Default a "newbie" attempting to learn

Okay, I've been reading through this forum rather a lot over the past few days, and still haven't really come to any conclusions about my car and engine. I'm driving a '93 Eclipse with a 1.8L SOHC engine. Does that mean it's a 420A engine? Or something similar? Or is it similar enough to the 4g63/4g64 engines that I could tentatively easily put one of those engines in? I really would like to get something stronger under the hood before I start adding performance parts (which would all have to be replaced anyway if I get another engine later on).

Also, I would *like* to change out from a 5 speed to a 6 speed when i change out the engine. Is this easy? Is it possible? what are the benefits and problems with doing this? Practically my sole reason for it is in realizing that at speeds above 125 I'm putting the engine past 6500 rpm (is that called redlining, or only when it pegs the meter?) which, I'm assuming, is not healthy for the engine for any length of time.

Anyways, thanks for any help you can give me,
-Takieda

Not familiar enough with your engine or the others to comment on that but if you upgrade the engine you shouldn't need a 6th gear. It is sort of usless. Red lining is when your tac reaches the red area, and yes it is unhealthy to do so. Your engine is idleing high at high speeds because one an eclipse is generally a low rpm engine and two yours isn't very powerfull, so you're at it's max. Swap for a bigger engine that is meant to go faster and you'll see a difference. A sixth gear is like a cruiseing gear, I think it would be a waste of money.

I've done some further reading about my engine, and apparently it's not the 420a, which is something of a relief. it SEEMS like it MIGHT be a 4g63, as the way it was described to me a 4g63 is just a designation of the engine that describes it's mounting system, etc. Or something like that, don't really understand, but the 4g63 isn't just one engine. Anyways, I might be able to put in a much larger engine as a result (pretty easiliy too I hope). About the sixth gear. At very high speeds I'm redlining the car (above 125 mph). Maybe I don't need it. I'm just trying to get the best setup for my car. Thanks for the response though. I do appreciate any help I can get.

No porb and good luck with all that. And remember I'm just a car fan with an opinion, don't let me steer you off if you have ideas!

Its not worth it to do all that work. I would sell your car and buy a turbo modle. To drop in a new motor you will need new motor mounts, Tranny, Motor, ECU and Wiring harness, new linkage along with a *** load of other things. Just save up a couple grand and get a 1g talon TSI or a 1g eclipse gsx/gst. Will save you a *** load of time money and you will have a option to go All Wheel Drive.

If it is a 4g63 he should just be able to re-sleeve it to make it the 2.0 or whatever he wants also motormounts should be in the same spot if it is a 4g63 ans for the tranny in those years of eclipse there was only one tranny i beleve.

Sleve it Why? And no its not a 4g63 its probly a 4g93, and you dont sleeve 4g63s there allready made of cast Iron and no the mounts will not work with the 4g63. And the trannys are not the same.

yes the block is cast iron but they have sleeves in them that is where the "big bore" four cylinder motors come from they re sleeve the motor. and in 1g dsm i know that the 2.0 turbo and N/A have the same motor wasnt sure if the 1.3 SOHC was a 4g63. but if it was a 4g63 than the mounts on the block should be in the same place.

Good call on the engine. I did a LOT of searching and never found that info. Best I could find was a rather vague reference to ALL 1g DSM's of the Eclipse variety having 4g63's, hence my confusion. who knows, maybe the site you found is wrong *crosses his fingers*.
Anyways, to get to 125 isn't all that difficult a task, just takes a bit of time (and NO COPS - heh). I was on Highway 49 heading to Hattiesburg from Gulfport and just punched it in a certain (where no cops ever are for some reason). Got myself up to 125 and realized I probably should slow down with the rain starting and all... it still had some acceleration, so i'd assume it would go faster, until a governor (does it have one?) kicks in.
