98 spyder 2.4 wont start
Ok fellas, this car will crank, but wont start. I checked the plugs and wasnt getting any fire. I was told the mfi and fuel pump relays can cause this, true? Also anymore ideas on what to check next, etc? Thanks!
I'm not sure why a fuel pump relay would cause you not to lose spark. When you pulled a plug to check for spark you grounded it on the block right? ignition systems are usually so dependable. I'm not sure how savvy you are so I try to start with the basics. Check cap and rotor (if it has one, I am a 1g owner) if you still believe it is the ignition system. Check your main buss, there are several fuses that operate the big systems for engine management there. THEN look at replacing components. Diagnosis is free. If there is no spark, the first place I look is the primary ignition system. Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, coil, and ignition module.
Well I am not too savvy with these jap cars. I am a diesel guy, so im learning as I go with this. Its odd cause the car ran fine. I drove it up on a trailer, turned it off. got to my destination, it fired up then immediately died! It never started since. I am going with what other people tell me, so figured I would turn to the experts here. makes sense what you told me though, guess i will check it again!
With what you tell me about the circumstances, It sounds probable (more so) that it could be a fuel issue. When you turn the key to the on position, can you hear the fuel pump prime the system? After cranking the car, do you smell fuel? I think if we deal with the two systems separately (ign and fuel) rather than as co-dependents we will get further. Take off the intake plumbing and spray throttle body cleaner into the throttle body while someone tries to start the car. If it tries to fire, we can probably rule out the ignition system. That will leave diagnosing the fuel system. If you heard the fuel system prime itself, you can rule out a relay and look elsewhere. I would move on to the fuel filter. Give us an update on whats going on and I will do my best to help.
