Its your EGR valve. If you try to bypass it you will make your check engine light come on. In moststates you will failan emissions test when you take your car for its yearly safety and emissions test (if your state requires it). Ichanged my egr valve on my 96 eclipse and its a totalchor to do. hope I gave a little help.

 

It also recirculates gasses into your intake causing carbon build up
