Yeah i say he can. Anything that removes the layer of burnt crap and shows the metal will work. It provides a smooth surface and is effective.

a razor blade and brake cleaner are what ive used on the hundreds of head gaskets ive changed, works great, just watch the sharp razor dont cut into the aluminum head, it does happen.

ya brake cleaner is not gonna harm the alluminum at all. nor will it leave any residue as it dissolves almost instantly. but be carefull with the razor blade like racerx55. it WILL scratch it if you touch it wrong

Best way I find to use a razor blade is to get under thick parts and pry then when it's all residue scrape the surface by DRAGGING the blade instead of pushing it... Don't know if you understand what I mean or not... But if you drag the blade against the head instead of trying to scrape it you'll NEVER put a cut in the head.

I gotcha man. But will dragging it really take it off? Wouldnt it just 'ride' along? If you get what i am saying... Like if there was a bump, would it not just ride over it.... I would probably have to push down harder if dragging it, right?

just use a gasket scraper, it looks like a chisel. you shouldnt do any damage using one of those unless you try to do some harm

Dude dragging it will do fine. You may have to push down a little but it shouldnt be that difficult.
