Fellas,
Recently, I've been having trouble getting the car to start when its cold. This did not happen last winter. When I say I'm getting trouble I mean that the car starts on the second try.. but I want it to start right away. I replaced the spark plugs a couple weeks ago also. I was wondering what could of cause this? Would the purchase of one of those ignition packs that improve spark remedy this problem or is it other maintainence?

 

if you didnt gap the plugs correctly, it can cause hard starting when cold
maybe try changing the fuel filter or just having a look at fuel pressure

 

did you replace wires? Coil pack could help but probably not necessary. How good is the battery? Starting doesnt always have to be becuase of spark. Like racer said, check the fuel too, because that can contibute. Does the car run bad at all?

 

Nah the car runs fine. Its just the start when its cold outside and the car itself is cold. Had the plugs installed by my mechanic who is pretty good so I doubt its the gap. The battery is pretty old though and I think the alternator has never been replaced and the car has over 100K on it. Think that might be the source?

 

if it turns over slowly it can take longer to start or just turn too slow to start at all, i think theyre pretty picky about cranking fast enough, i know my 420a in my neon wont start if it turns over slow, there 2 totally different cars but some are just like that, things ive always had make a hard cold start on fuel injected engines is weak spark, lack of fuel delivery, or way too high of plug gap/worn out plugs, or worst possible case lack of compression, theres a number of things that go along with any of those, you just have to start with the easy cheap simple things first, if the fuel filter hasnt been changed in a year or longer i would personally start there since you have fairly new plugs, and if you run race fuel in a low compression turbo engine they will be a real ******* to start whe its cold outside

 

You'd be surprised how many mechanics don't even think about properly gapping plugs anymore. I'd start with that first. Then change the plug wires and listen to the engine crank. If it cranks slowly then replace the battery like TheEng and Racer both mentioned.

 

that is true, most guys just throw plugs in without even checking the gap, thats one reason i dont trust anyone but myself to work on my cars
