Default 1994 Pajero Problems

Hey everyone, hopefully you guys have a few ideas. I own a 1994 Pajero Exceed 2.8 Turbo Diesel. It runs fine at the start, but soon it loses all low end power when taking off, and puffs tonnes of black smoke. Also there is a lound clunking sound from the engine compartment. It has the same problem at 120 KM/H as well and can't seem to get any power to get to passing speeds. If anyones had this problem can you please help.

I had this, does it feel almost like the engine was being restricted or the handbrake was being pulled on? generally when I pulled off and around the 100-120km/hr turned out it was a knackered autobox. as a test next time it does it throw it into neutral and if it goes away than thats probably it. it only done it when the car had been driven for more than 20 mins and was warmed up but it started getting worse so i got shot of it.

Not the best news that I wanted to hear, but thanks anyways! That's exactly what it's doing. Thanks again!
