Charging System Issues
Sons car. 96 Eclipse 2.0L Non-Turbo
Took the head off the car and repaced the valve stem seals (leaking). Replaced the oil pan gasket (seeping). Put it back together and it runs great.
Went to leave for school and battery light came on. Friend following him said they saw sparks come out from the passenger side. Dash lights flickered and the radio went off.
He came back and the battery was dead. Jumped it and it started. Radio/lights working. 2 minutes in the radio died, then the lights went out and then the car slowly sputtered and died. Jumped it once more and pulled the positive cable while it was running - died instantly. Pulled alternator (love that you have to lossen the motor mount and jack the engine up to get it out) - checked out BAD.
Replaced with a new one. Partailly charged the battery (charger unplugged by accident). Test run and battery light came on again - then radio died. Back home
Wife took fully charged battery and had it checked - good battery. Put back in and test run. Battery light again in less than 2 blocks. Back home
Going to check ALL wires tonight. Need to get it running.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

Well,
Since no one else seems to have any answers, I solved this one myself.
Took the alternator out and back to the store for a check. It checks out good.
I did some digging and go figure, there is a 120 amp fuse in the charging system.
New $2.50 fuse and it is charging like a champ.

Well,
Alternator fixed and "check engine" light came on. Seemed to have lost a little power, hoping it's a sensor. Ran to the store, code check, loose crank sensor or timing jumped by one tooth or more.
Check senosor - nope. Go figure, timing jumped on rear cam by one tooth.
Tore the front end off, reset the timing, checked it twice, set the tensioner by the book and put it back together. Running like a champ again - no lights on.
Whole tear apart and reassemble took just under 5 hours. Not too bad for one person.
