Speed/Odo meters are out and car dies
i have a little problem. i own a 96 mitsu eclipse rs. a few days ago i had the spedo and the odometer go out on me. once those two things went out the car started to idle very low and would die once the clutch was disengaged. one time i spilt my coffee and almost caused an accident because of this stupid problem. WTF??? any ideas? Probably the speed sensor huh? does the speed sensor control the idle? thanks!

speed sensor is in the tranny. the idle is being controlled by the ISC (idle speed control) correct me if im wrong but i think it's located in the back throttle boddy. or u could go ahaed and check ur speedometer sensor or cable located in your transmission. this happens co'z this sensors (speedo) sends signal to the ECU that creates a malfunction on the system?? is your MIL (malfunction indication lamp) on??

it could be more severe try to get your car's engine light checked by midas sure they will help you. and give you the codes and then post it here..it's not that expensive. or try locating ur speed sensor and check it or try to replace it.

replaced the speed sensor and the car is now running great! i ran a little test to see if the speed sensor had anything to do with the car dieing. i pulled out the new speed sensor (still connected to the electrical) and pulled off the little plastic piece that covers the main shaft on the sensor. i started the car and then i applied an electric drill to the shaft. with the car in neutral and the engine running; i let the drill do what a drill does (at this point i was fooling the ecu to think that the car was moving). the drill was spining that shaft very fast; the speedo only read about 25mph.
conclusion: the speed sensor is what made the car die. when i 'simulated' that the car was going 25mph the rpms where higher then when i 'simulated' that the car was going 5mph.
weird.....

It's really not that weird at all. Just means your speed sensor now is doing exactly what it's supposed to. And YES the speed sensor DOES have that much control over the engine. I had a '86 Colt that the speed sensor went bad in and I didn't have the $ for a new one (I couldn't even afford to have the rear main seal fixed which was dumping 3 quarts of oil outta the car every time I shut the engine off). If I connected the speedo cable the engine ran like crap but as soon as I disconnected that cable the engine ran like a dream LOL.
