Default speedometer going up and down

I have a 2001 eclipse syder and my speedometer goes up and down sometime when i drive. then the check engine light comes on and it switch into neutrul and then the neutral light will blink a code or something. i would cut the engine off for a lil while and start it back up. it will run for a whle longer and then it do the same thing. Sometime it will drive for hours and no mess up sometime it will drive for couple of minutes. I change all the sensor twice and i got the ecm look at too. Have anybody have the same problem and if so how do i go about fixing it. thanks for your help.

I took it to a mechanic he said there a problem with the signal not getting to my speedometer sensor like its a short somewhere. They changed out the two negative wire and it still sometime go crazy. They told now that I would need a new harness for my car costing me $2000 $1000 for the harness and $1000 for labor. Does it really take that much?

The speedometer can fluctuate rapidly under normal driving conditions when your eclipse's speed changes abruptly, but sometimes the needle can start swinging around the dial without any fluctuation in speed. If the hairspring comes loose or breaks, it can't hold the speed cup in place, and the result is a fluctuation in the dial. In electrical speedometers, if the circuit that counts the magnetic pulses fails, it can cause the speedometer read-out to vary from the actual speed and to shoot upward or downward without notice. If a speed sensor in the automatic transmission starts to malfunction, it can affect the speedometer and cause fluctuations. In these instances, either the speedometer or the sensor needs replacement.

Either the speed sensor or the speed sensor wire is bad.

The ******* shop wants to replace your wiring harness because it's an expensive item, and it's easy to change. If the ******** are charing you to **** around replacing parts ***** nilly, DON'T PAY THE ****ING BILL!!! They didn't fix the problem by replacing the part they claimed had failed, so why would you pay for their mistakes??? I ****ing hate this kind of dishonesty.

Granted, the wiring harness runs all through the car but all you have to do is unclip ****, and attach the replacement harness. It takes a good few hours.

SO, what to do? First things first, take it to a competent shop. Second, I would replace your speed sensor, or the speed sensor cable. The cluster is not the culprit, because it wouldn't be intermittent (in my opinion).
