Default Spyder '03 head gasket/engine replacement

I just bought a Eclipse Spyder GTS '03, I test drove it around townit was very smooth ride no problemand they told me everything was working fine, but I soon as I jumped in the express way it over heated, the dealership mechanic said that there's a problem with the head gasket. I don't know much about cars yet alone imports, however he metion that it would be a better idea to replace the entire engine since it would be easier, so now I'm waiting on the engine. Since dealers are untrusty, Is it easier to replace the engine than the head hasket?Do you think they can put a less powerful engine? How can I notice it? Any other comments are appriciated.

umm well i dont know for sure how hard it is to do a head gasket on a v6, but on 4 cylinders it is VERY simple and easy job to change the gasket. Sounds to me like they are trying to screw you

V6? better off getting a new engine.... and dont just get a stock one get one from TPS =D race block... so if you want later on down the road to turbo it.. you wont have to worry about upgrading your internals... an typical race block can range from 2400 to 4000 =D

obviously i dont think this person is ready, or even interested in a race engine. Ejrry, usually head gasket are a pain too re-due, but not enough to replace then engine. The head has to come off, and sent off to a machine shop ( if your doing it right) where it's shaved down, and repolished wish shaved seals. On most 4 cylinder cars, shops charge from 400-900 dollars, depending on how they do it. However, on a v6, you have to remove alot more components, and it's alot tougher, thus resulting in the bill being alot higher. My suggestion is, do some research and find out how much it would be to replace your head gasket, as oppose to buying a brand new engine and having it installed. For the record, i'll advise you, it might be cheaper just to replace the engine.

As for installing a downgrade engine in your car, that's highly illegal and very unlikely. The dealership could loose their license, and the master technician who worked on your car could be sued. If infact they take the risk, just look up what v6 is suppose to go in your car, the exact specifications, and the engine code and match them up, and that's how you'll know if they did or not

i wish you luck, let me know how it goes

Gus
