Default 2003 montero ltd center differential lock light flashing

Hi I have a 2003 mit montero limited, On the dash their is a picture which is the REAR WHEEL DRIVE/4-WHEEL DRIVE OPERATION INDICATOR LIGHT which indicates which setting the car is in, 2 wheel, 4 wheel etc. After I drive about 40 miles on the highway (not the city ) The CENTER DIFFERENTIAL LOCK LIGHT starts flashing yellow. This prevents being able to change 2 to 4 wheel drive. After the car is turned off and restarted the light goes back to normal. I've preformed all the transmissin service, flushes etc. My mechanic says I need to replace the 4 sensors on the transfer case. But isn't 100% sure if this will fix the problem or not. The car has 80,000 miles on it. PLEASE HELP WITH ANY SUGGESTIONS ON THE FLASHING LIGHT

I had a similar problem and a quick fix seems to be switching from 2 to 4 once a week just to exercise the mechanics/electricals. I drive only a short distance in 4WD (100ft) and its not come back on for quite a while! Good Luck!

As stated above, if the middle light is flashing. Stop, turn the ignition off and back on. The light will have reset; when you're somewhere safe, put the vehicle into 4WD and drive @ 100m or so and then back into 2WD on the fly.

I do this monthly or so and have not had any further issues with it. I put it down to simple lack of use of the 4WD system.

Some body was mentioning the contact points in the gear selector can't cause the lights to flash so he moves the gear selector across the full range of options about a hundred times...or something like that.

I agree, put it into four wheel drive once in awhile.

If all else fails...sensor time.
