Manybrews: the crankshaft damper failed 2 years ago and was replaced. One of the belts snapped, and when it did it lodged itself behind the crankshaft damper and literally forced it off. There's no way the thing can be going again this soon.

BrokeDad: I'm going to try the soap trick, if that doesn't work I'm going to try some WD-40, (I've heard of that supposedly helping) if that doesn't work I'll try to get some original belts from the dealer.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I promise to post the results so that others might benefit if I'm successful.

Ciao.........

Default Squealing no-more

Hi Gang,

The oil stopped the squealing.

I tried the soap trick and got nothing, as a matter of fact the squealing got louder. Then I got some motor oil and literally poured the oil on the belts and they stopped squealing and stayed quite for the rest of the day.

Anybody else out there with loud aggravating, annoying belts....... smother them in oil and drive in peace.....................

Ciao............

Glad you found a solution and I'm sorry the old soap trick didn't work. Thanks for letting us know what did work for you as others always benefit here from people posting the solution that worked for them.

what is crankshaft damper? I have problem of new belt derailing - you can see the lowest pulley is wobbling. Have taken it off - rubber inside it seems to have been rubbing/melting - Is that the crankshaft damper??

The crank damper/pulley is bolted to the crank and like you said it has a rubber ring. To me it sounds like your pulley is seperating.

Default Crank Pulley

RandB1959,

Read these next words very carefully please.......

One of my belts broke last year and when it did, it got jammed behind the pulley you and gsm1990dsx are talking about.

When it jammed, the valves bent because the motor was stopped abruptly, that little belt breaking, and pulley jamming cost me $1.800 for a new head.

Don't walk - run to a garage to get a new one installed, and put on solid belts before you wind up spending a ridiculous amount of money over something that you can fix now relatively cheap.

Thumbs up

my 96' had a the same problem. The solution is OEM belts. It seems their is no standard in the degree of the "V" on pulleys and belts. Mitsubishi's are unique to their own. A non-OEM belt will not sit correctly in the "V" groove and very loud squealing is the result. By the way, the dealers no this very well.

God bless,

Stephen
