Trans malfunction in OD

Trans malfunction in OD
I hope you guys can help me. I have a 1995 Mitsu Galant with auto trans w/OD. It started slipping in and out of gear when the OD switch is on. Really undrivable. With the switch in the off position it's fine. I'm getting suggestions such as shift solenoid, torque converter solenoid, etc. One guy on another board suggested the torque converter. The car is actually my son's. I have pretty good "shade tree" ability, but diagnosing a transmission is way outside my scope of expertise. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

ruptured end clutch.
It can be replaced easily without transaxle removal, in under an hour.
you can buy the whole clutch assembly (which is definatly the way to go... dont "rebuild" the end clutch!) at your local mitsu dealer. Probably be 200-300 bucks.
check this link for some knowledge.

its very common.

Thanks manybrews. If I understand correctly I can purchase the whole clutch pack and just swap them out. The link you included describes teardown and rebuild. If I can buy it complete and pull one out and put the other one in as a complete assembly that's awesome. I don't know if I wan't to attempt a rebuild of the component. Thanks

RE: Trans malfunction in OD
I was glad to come across this post as I believe that I have a car experiencing the same problem. A 1998 Galant. In OD, it won't go anywhere, just revs the engine. Out of OD, the car moves, seems to get to pretty high rev (3500), then trys to shift, but seems to fail, then a few seconds later, shifts very hard (I'm assuming that this is some sort of "Limp mode"). Doesn't seem to shift again after that, but I've only run it up to about 40mph since it started this problem. Also, no reverse at all. When I checked the transmission fluid last week (prior to this problem showing up), it was good, now it is hard to get a reading as the fluid seems to be overheated and bubbles up the stick too much. But I'm again assuming that it is alright, just burnt.
Obviously, I would like to hope that replacing the end clutch would be my total solution, but m afraid that maybe the transmission is too far gone. I wan't able to find any listing for the complete replacement end clutch online, so I'm thinking that the dealer is the only place to get this animal?
Thanks,
