Default 2002 Montero not starting

New member here looking for some advice. My son’s 2002 Montero (3.0) won’t start. He drove it to school and when he went to leave it would turn over but wouldn’t start. I had it towed home and scanned the codes. It had a P0335 code so I replaced the cam and crank sensor. Timing belt was good along with the timing. Still wouldn’t start. I sprayed starting fluid in the intake and it would try to run. Checked the fuel pump relay and even swapped it for another one. No change. Dropped the fuel tank and had my son crank while I checked the plug for voltage. No problem there. Hooked a jump pack to the fuel pump and it works fine. I appreciate any advice or recommendations 👍

If it fires with the starting fluid, that means your ignition is working (sparking) and compression is likely to be OK too. You are right to follow on the fuel side. Do you have an inline fuel filter? It is possible that it is completely clogged and that prevents fuel delivery even when the pump is running.

I just can’t see the inline fuel filter suddenly stopping up completely with no indication beforehand. I might replace it anyway just to check.

It is not entirely improbable. The only real way to check is to see fuel delivery at the engine. Unfortunately there is no easy way to do it on Montero. There is no dedicated fuel pressure testing port on Montero. You can get an adapter to check fuel pressure. That is really the only way to check that. You "could" crack the supply or return line and see if you are getting fuel flow from there, but that could be dangerous.
