Default 2002 Montero Sport Ticking Noise

My wife and I just purchased a 2002 Montero Sport suv. We absolutely love it especially because it has only 74,200 miles on her. On the way back from North Carolina we noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine area. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help guys even though Im the newb.

Could be something else, but try this first:

It could be valve lash adjuster noise. It happened to me after I let the oil get too low. It sounds like a loud knock.

I found this link and the procedure worked wonders. The noise stopped and has never come back.

(This procedure is also written up in the factory manual so it's not junk science)

Good luck.

I did this procedure to my 2003 Sport after it had been sitting on a dealers lot for 40 days and it really improved it - didn't eliminate it, but I figured with 105,000 miles on the engine it wasn't going to. The noise from the engine now is minimal and most of that I attribute to the fans.

one pint of Marvel Mystery Oil into the crankcase stopped my annoying ticking sounds completely!
