Default 87 Montero - Swap suggestions?

Just picked up a rust free 87 Montero. It has a blown head gasket, it's difficult to start, and shakes around violently while idling. It's knocking all over, the manifold is all rusted. It has 120k miles, I'm thinking I may as well have a new motor put in, it will probably be cheaper than fixing everything.

What should I get? A rebuilt 2.6l 4 cylinder will cost me $1,300 at least, it seems like I could find something bigger and better for that price. Any ideas?

I would pull the engine and pull the head and pan and see if it is still a good foundation to rebuild. Might be cheaper to do rather than buying a longblock.
