It's usually better to replace an engine or tranny with a rebuilt. It is quicker, easier, and cheaper to just swap out yours than pay to pull it apart and have it rebuilt.

The smoking is from the valve stem seals. They tend to wear out. They can be replaced on the engine without removing the heads, but it is difficult. If you replace them your engine will go another 100k miles. A '97 is one of the best year montero's out there. One other possibility is a product called Auto-RX. You can read about it at; www.auto-rx.com You can also find a lot of info at www.bobistheoilguy.com under the "additives" forum. It is only $25 and has gotten a lot of rave reviews.

If you want a new engine I would only get one from the dealer. A new block with heads is about $2300. If you take care of it it will go 200k easy.
