Default 99 Montero Sport - front brake pad issue

I just purchased Akebono ceramic pads for the front of my Montero Sport. Previously changed the rear pads without a problem.
Removed a front caliper, popped out the old pads, used a brake pad spreader to retract the pistons, installed the new pads and attempted to re-install the caliper. It will start on the disk, but requires a lot of persuasion to line up with the locking bolt holes, and then, when bolted on, locks up the disk.
I ran out of time, and re-installed the old pads - however, it appears that I'm missing something fundamental.
I just read the Mitchell service manual, which was not helpful.
Anybody help with this?
Thanks
