Default Code retrieval not working...

Hey guys, so my 91 Montero kicked on the CEL about a week after installing the new motor, but Im having problems getting the codes out of it. Ive been told to run an analog voltmeter between the yellow wire and ground, then turn the key on and watch the needle, expecting long and short needle sweeps. Well, all Im getting is a 12 volt reading, and it just stays there. Any clues to what Im not doing correctly? It is the rectangular white connector under the glove box, right? Sorry, 1991 Montero w/ 3.0. Thanks for advice!

Okay... So, am I in the wrong section? Are there no techs here?

Nope, just shade tree mechanics...
Check this link for a procedure on a different Mitsubishi (non OBT II):
Engine Light! How To Check The Code? - Mitsubishi-Forums.com

I recall doing the similar type of thing on an older GMC vehicle that was pre-OBT II. I hope this helps.
