Ecu not providing ground for fuel pump relay.
Hello,
I am new to this forum and to the Montero Sport.
I have a 2002 Montero Sport LS and I bought it from a person who did not want to repair it. So i have virtually no history on the car. The timing belt had broken and bent valves. I had the heads repaired, installed new timing belt, and installed a new water pump. I also repaird the broken wire in the crankshaft sensor. I resolder the wires and used heat shrink tubing. After getting everything back together the car won't start. I have traced this to the ecu not providing a ground for the fuel pump relay. If i ground the (i think it is the yellow/white) wire the fuel pump runs and the car starts and runs almost instantly. At any case it is the only non black/white wire in the 4 wire connector. I have checked the resistances from the ecu circuit board solder point for the connector out to the relay connector and it is near zero ohms. I am sure the problem is on the ecu side. I don't know if the ecu is looking for a signal from a sensor and withholding the ground signal, the ecu is missing a voltage/ground signal, or the ecu is bad??? When the key is turned to "on" there is no two second ground provided by the ecu. I have monitored the "ground" pin and it never gets pulled to ground. I have also replaced the fuel pump relay and the one on the same bracket with it. I have also disconnected all sensor on the engine to ensure no shorts and checked all fuses I could find. I have read the obd codes and there are none reported. Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone could give on where to go next with this.
To get this vehicle going i was going to ground the fuel pump relay pin and use it for a short while till l get this problem sorted out. Outside of the safety concerns - are there any problem that could arise for the fuel pump running constantly like it would be?
Again, thanks for your time.
