How to Reset the "Maintenance Required" Light - 1994 Montero
I thought I would give a few quick tips on how to Reset that switch so the "Maintenance Required" light goes out. This light is supposed to come on about every 50,000 miles so you can pay your hard-earned Roubles to pay a mechanic to check the catalytic converter, and then pull apart the dash to toggle the little switch to reset it so the light goes out. These pictures apply to a 1994 Montero.
This lite is located on the left side of the bottom row of 3 lites on the Tach cluster:
2 screws on each side of the top pad, and then there is a small square plastic plug on top, a couple inches from the windshield, which pops up with a small screwdriver: This small racheting driver with a phillips bit worked great:
A green and a yellow connector need to be unplugged on the right side, and a white one on the left side. These require that you squeeze a tab and then pull, not too bad.
You can leave the cluster attached to all the wires, and there is just enough room to get a small mirror behind it, and using a Pick Hook took, reach in and slide a super small slide switch. Where my fingers are in the picture is where the little slider switch is behind the cluster. The switch is reset, so you cant just use your finger to slide it, but need that pic tool to reach down to it and slide it.....and a mirror and light so you can see the darn thing. Would have been real nice if the engineers had just put this switch behind a small removable panel, or someplace easier to get to.
I did the switch-slide with the key off. Then I turned the key to the "on" position, and the Maint. Req. Lite still came on and stayed on. So, I then tried starting the engine, and that did the trick......gotta start the engine for the computer to finish doing the reset. Now, the lite is off......well worth the hour it took to fix this issue. The next guy can do it 50,000 miles in the future.
