Need new Motor for 1998 Montero
I just bought a 98 Montero and it has 216XXX miles on it and is smoking a bit out of the tailpipe. My first thought is to drop a new motor in it. Obviously I don't want to drop a couple grand into a brand new engine, can anyone tell me first what engines will swap seamlessly into the 98 and second, where is the best place to look for a good used engine. Thank you all for your advice!

I looked long and hard for a used, rebuilt, or new motor when mine threw 2 rod bearings. Also could not determine the interchange with other models. In the end, I rebuilt mine.

If your engine runs well, but just smokes a bit, I suggest you replace the valve stem seals. If you are mechanically inclined, you should be able to do this yourself. There are ways to replace the valve stem seals without removing the cylinder heads from the engine.
