Welcome to the forums, martindn.

Sounds like a relay problem alright. What exactly are your symptoms? Are you getting any juice to the starter? Do you have a test light or a multimeter or some way of doing any electrical sleuthing? Check the condition of ALL of your fuses....

Don't keep us in the dark, so to speak....

1990 is a lot earlier than mine but I'm not sure if there's ever one relay that controls all power to the fuse box. If just some critical circuits are dead then it might be the ignition switch.

Start at the battery and follow the Pos battery cable and look for any smaller cables that branch off - probably at the starter solenoid post. Those smaller ones feed all the power to the rest of the truck - including the fuse box. Chase those with your test light you should be able to find out where the interruption is.

A bad fusible link was my first thought and I just checked my '99 circuit diagram. The main link between the battery and fuse box is indeed labeled a fusable link. Find that smaller positive cable (not the large one that goes to the starter) and see if it isn't the problem. Fusible links look just like normal cables but melt inside whey they go bad. Sometimes they have a tag on them denoting fusable link. If you have +12v on one end and zip volts at the other that's your problem.

Google 1990 Montero Fusible Link and you will find that others have the same problem. Here's a link from Autozone: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/rep...054950#hd1-1-2

Next challenge is to find out why it blew but from the google replies is sounds like a common prob. A weak link?

more than likely the relay, I had a similar problem, wouldn't start, my mechanic changed out the relay (on the passenger floor board) but wouldn't stay going after 2 min. got a ecu from pick an pull and all is well. hope this helps
