OK, I've been playing Russian roulette with my timing belt long enough...it's time to bite the bullet, hold my breath and replace it.

I've got my shop manual, my parts, my tools and a bottle of single malt scotch...but I don't have special tools 998767 and 99769....what are they? what do they do? where can I get them? Can I hack something to serve the purpose?

The 998767 is for pre-tensioning the timing belt. It is best to get it (even though you could cheat and hack something for this purpose). I got mine from Amazon. Search for "OTC (7997) Timing Belt Wrench". It is not a Mitsubishi tool, but same size/design and it works. I do not know what the other tool you are referring to.
