Default steering column rattle

Hey ,

I get a rattle in my steering column when driving and a slight whine at the steering wheel when turning left.

I ve taken off the steering wheel but all looks good under there. The bearing relubed, still rattling.

The suspension parts look good and i replaced all of the stabiliser bar bushings.

Anyone know this problem?

thanks

A rattle in the steering column is usually caused by the intermediate shaft. Below is a picture of it #45343a Search part number 4401a075 on my site where it will cost you about $160.00.
the part has been revised a few times to solve this issue.

Thanks,

My mech agrees. He showed me where there is slight movement in the shaft at the top joint when turning the steering.

I cant believe mitsu uses such a skinny shaft on a big vehicle as this. My old grand cherokee had a solid shaft.

I read an old thread that suggested using hose clamps at the end of the shaft to stop this. Has anyone tried that yet?

Just a quick note. I bought a 2001Montero Sport a while back and had a rattle in the steering column. After reading this post and talking to the local dealership I spent several hundred dollars replacing the intermediate shaft. It did nothing. I took it back and had it checked again, it was the column. 800 dollars, it works great. After digging around the net, you'll find that this is something Mitsubishi knows about, but because it's not life threatening, it comes out of our pockets.
