CVT issue
Hello,
Outlander 2.4 125kw, 2009 4WD CVT Transmission - I have problem with whining on cold start, went to service and they replaced the oil and filters in transmission. After that whining dissapeared for a month and half and now is back again.
The whining is only present if car is sitting for 4 or more hours and then turned on. It is louder on cold days, if it is warm outside I am not able to hear it.
Also it is present only on 1500 or more RPM for the first few minutes (5-15 - it depends on how cold outside is).
As I can see CVT fluid level is fine (measured cold and hot).
Can someone give me some advice what could be the cause of this issue and how to resolve it?
Thank you in advance.

I have never owned a vehicle that had a CVT and, hopefully, never will. Traditional automatic transmissions have gone through at least 70 years of design improvements. CVTs have not. There have been "teething" issues with CVTs and, as usual, post warranty period, their owners pay the price of those issues. Maybe Mit. CVTs are better now than they were 13 years ago. Maybe not. I simply don't knw.
I suggest searching around on this Outlander forum and other Mit. model forums for owners who have had issues with their CVTs and see how these issues were or were not resolved.
I also suggest taking the vehicle to several businesses that specialize in transmissions only and carefully consider their advice about Mitsubishi CVTs. The worst that can happen is that you have to replace your CVT, which, at a transmission specialty place, will be consderably less expensive than having the job done at a stealership. However, the cost of doing this may exceed the value of your '09, so that's something to think about. (Our 2010 XLS with auto transmission has not yet had serious problems. Would I replace its auto trans if it failed? I don't know, but, eventually, I will.
)
In the meantime, see what Scotty has to say about CVTs in general. Note that he says that he has never seen a Corolla CVT in his shop.
Then take a look at what it takes to rebuild an Outlander CVT. Young, experienced experts doing their thing.
Good luck.
